Stephen W. Kaja, MHA, LFACHE
Steve is a career healthcare executive whose experience spans a wide range of the healthcare spectrum. In over 40 years of leadership, Steve has served in the U. S. Navy health system, as a director of a Chicago-region managed care company, and has held senior executive and CEO positions with several independent and hospital system physician groups ranging in size from 30 to 600 practitioners. The executive positions have been in organizations of over $1 billion annual revenues and rated as some of the top employers in the country. He has developed a physician network from 0 to over 7,000 physicians, negotiated hospital and physician group contracts, and recruited physicians in a variety of specialties. As a CEO, he returned a 30-physician, multi-specialty group from the brink of bankruptcy and dissolution back into a thriving $20 million year entity, preserving one of the largest employers in its community. Ever mindful of the mission of health care, he initiated the creation of a free clinic involving the combined resources of two health systems. Along the way, he has been a part of numerous electronic health record system implementations.
Steve holds a Master of Health Administration degree from Washington University in the St. Louis School of Medicine. He is a long-serving Life Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, a member of the Medical Group Management Association, and a retired Captain of the U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps. He has served as the president of two regional healthcare executive associations and as a member of numerous advisory councils.
